Indeed one of (if not THE) most effective ways to start a home based Internet business is building a website that gets pulled up in the major search engines. The search engines can provide floods of targeted visitors which can be monetized in a number of different ways (affiliate marketing, AdSense, network building, lead generating, service and product selling, etc.)

There are ways to earn instant money, and building a search engine optimized website is NOT one of them. Building a site requires a time investment, often several months before any real profits will be made. But like I said, this is an INVESTMENT of time. What do investments usually do? Well if they do what they should, they pay interest and dividends for years to come. That is precisely why setting up a SEO'd site is so effective. It offers long term residual benefits. Once the site is listed and ranked, it does ALL of your advertising for you. It offers traffic, all you then do is monetize (and cash the checks).

Building a website according to SEO principles is not difficult by any means. Many people simply go wrong by trying to cheat the system to achieve instantaneous results. Sorry to say that this doesn't work. Why? Well basically....the engines are smarter than that. They know very easily when they are being manipulated, and they don't like it. The best route to take, the only route that lead to long term success, is following basic principles that please the engines. You please them, they will without a doubt return the favor.

All this being said, we come to the question "what pleases the search engines?" That's exactly what I'm here to tell you. By following the principles listed below, you can build a perfectly optimized website that will deliver enough traffic for you to grow a very successful (and profitable) home business.

The foundation of any great website is CONTENT. Content is the life-force of a website. Content is definitely useful for pre-selling leads, strengthening customer relationships, etc. But content is also the most important aspect search engine optimization, the core of a highly favored website.

It's important to look at the process as a whole. Let's take a look from the Search Engines point of view. They, just like any other online business, are providing a service to their users. Their service is to help people locate the INFORMATION that they are seeking. The Internet is essentially a giant information bank. People search online to find info for just about everything.

This is why flashy sales pages, gateway and landing pages, and numerous other "mirror" pages do not have any power at the Engines. The engines are looking for content....unique, fresh, valuable content. This is what the users are looking for, and engines are trying their best to deliver.

So the first (and most important) task of SEO Web development is integrating unique content into the various pages of a Website. As the spiders crawl content rich webpages, they signal to the Engines that the site has value, and therefore should be moved to a prominent spot in the search results, so users can find the site.

The content of a Website should be focused on a certain niche, a general theme that the site appeals to. This may be different for a number of home businesses, but the idea is to keep the content revolving around the theme of the site. This brings us perfectly into the next topic of discussion, using the right keywords (and using the keywords right!)

Keywords play a huge role in Website Search Engine optimization. Keywords, when properly used, indicate to the engines what searches each page should be found under. Many people have a difficult time with keywords for two reasons. One, they don't know how to choose profitable keywords. And two, they often misuse keywords, which does more harm than good.

Finding profitable keywords is not a difficult thing to do. There are a number of free sites that will help you locate good keywords. Search for "word tracker" and you should find a great keyword tool that is free to use. There are two things to consider when choosing the keyword (s) or phrase (s) for a particular page. First is relevancy. The point of a keyword is to target your specific market. So start any keyword search with words and phrases that would likely be used by people who would be interested in the information (and products, services, etc.) that you are offering.

A keyword search for a specific word or phrase (2-3 words) will most likely bring back hundreds, if not thousands of similar keywords. Choosing the profitable keywords is not difficult, as long as you know what you should be looking for. The best route is to find keywords that have high to moderate demand (many people searching for that specific keyword) as well as low supply or "competition" (a limited amount of other websites using the same word.)

Many people understand the first part of that equation, yet the second part  (the most important part for SEO) is often overlooked. I have always been stunned to see that one keyword will have a tremendous amount of competition, literally millions of people trying to fight over position for that word, and yet a very similar keyword with close to equal demand, is almost untouched. These are the profitable keywords that can get you into the top ten listings.

The fact that so many holes exist in each market just goes to show that most people either aren't doing their research, or they have know idea how the system works. This is great news, however, for you and me. These holes can be utilized to drive massive traffic to a website, while similar sites are all left fighting over a keyword that has way to much competition to make the battle worthwhile. (This same keyword technique can be used for your article marketing efforts as well, which also can play a role in SEO.)

Finding the right keyword is only the first in this two part equation. Using keywords is another place where the masses fail (even though they "think" they are being so clever.) Here we come to a priceless lesson....NEVER TRY AND FOOL THE ENGINES!! You may be a brilliant individual, but attempting to trick the engines is just not doable. "Keyword stuffing," trying to cram in a keyword as many times as possible, will always do more harm than good.

Once again it's best to play by the rules, and simply do what pleases the engines. Keywords simply serve as "hooks" telling the engines what a particular page is about, so that searchers can find it at the engines. Overusing keywords is not providing any service to the visitors, and therefore won't win you any favor at the engines. Actually the engines hate being mislead, so don't be surprised if your overused keyword pages get dropped from the engines.

Each page should ideally be focused around one primary keyword or phrase. A few other related ones can be added, but the content will naturally provide a variety of other search-able terms anyway (once again a benefit of lots of content.) So focus on one, and get it right. By over delivering great content on the topic of one specific keyword, you will please your visitors, and the engines will send more your way.

So how many times should a keyword be used? Well it depends on the length of the page, but as a rule of thumb it should be used once per 100 words. On a short page, 250-400 words, 2-3 times should be plenty. You will also want to include the specific keyword a few other places, including a headline at the beginning of the page, a text link somewhere throughout the page, and of course in the page title and meta-description.

By over delivering great content on a specific keyword, properly placing that keyword throughout, and putting it in the other necessary spots, you will have a page that can easily win at the engines for that keyword. As the page and site gains credibility, other phrases and words will get that page found as well.

O.k. so now you know how to layout the site, single pages focused on specific keywords, and all the pages revolving around the basic theme of the site. But there are a few other factors for effective search engine optimization.

Inbound links (links FROM a related site TO your site) are also a necessary component of seo. Many webmasters spend way to much time trying to secure inbound links. While it is needed, as well as very profitable, it should not consume your entire life. Once again content has a large part in easily attaining inbound links.

A content rich website adds value to the users online experience. Therefore related sites will be pleased to exchange links with you, and many will do so on their own, not even asking a link in return. Also, directories (which we will cover next) do not allow flimsy sales pages and websites that do not contain unique information and value. Therefore, creating a number of content rich pages, offering interesting information to visitors, is the backbone to the entire search engine optimization process.

Exchanging links with other webmasters can be a good route, but you need to keep in mind a couple of things. First, make sure that the sites you are linking to are up to your standards. 10 links from crappy sites are less valuable then one quality link. Another thing to remember is that not everyone plays by the rules. You will be wise to check the linked up partners site once in a while to make sure that your link is still there.

Another route to go for inbound linking is to utilize the many online directories. Directories are akin to online phone books, offering users a place to find valuable resources and websites. Since the rise of the search engines, online directories aren't used as much. However, we are not using them for the traffic they produce (which can be a nice 'bonus') but we are using them to SEO our home business site.

Most directories have human editors that review submitted sites for inclusion. Because of this, the engines give high credibility to links coming from certain directories. A great place to search for SEO friendly directories, free or paid, is info.vilesilencer.com

How many links do you need to look credible in the eyes of the search engines? Well the more the better, and linking can be a long term process with always increasing benefits. However, to really start the Search Engine optimization snowball rolling, you should strive for 40-50 in pointing links. This will allow the engines to find your site over and over, and they will recognize it as a valuable resource that they can share with their users.

By following these simple practices, you will start the process of building a perfectly Search Engine optimized home business website. Keep in mind that while some of these activities may seem tedious, they are powerful time investments that will pay interest for many years. Tricks and manipulative strategies may have a few quick benefits, but they are always short lived. The engines are getting smarter by the day, and the tricksters are losing ground.

Anyone building a content rich website, and following the basic rules, will enjoy benefits for long term traffic and ever growing profits. And keep the momentum going by regularly adding site content, new pages, and once and a while securing a few more links. As time goes, your site will have more pages, with more keywords, getting higher and higher rankings at the engines. Success is guaranteed.
